This portrait was painted for a few hours from life at the Friday Group, Victorian Artists Society and finished in my studio. It is of Uncle Jack Charles, respected Australian indigenous elder, actor, activist, raconteur, a Stolen Generation child. Oil on board 50x40cm, framed.

Oil on board 44x55cm including frame. 2020. Painted from life at the Victorian Artists Society, Melbourne.

UPDATE: This painting was awarded the MSWPS (Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors) annual members award as voted by my peers! It is the third time that I have won this, twice jointly.

I painted this woman from life in The Friday Group, Victorian Artists Society. I enjoyed the challenge of painting older skin and white hair.

Chiara was our model in the Friday Group of the Victorian Artists Society. I painted her from life for about two hours and completed the work in my studio. Oil on composition board, 54x44cm, framed.

Oil on composition board. 70x100cm framed. I did this painting whilst in Covid 19 lockdown 2020. I began painting it soon after I was given the nine gorgeous sunflowers by my sister. I decided that it had to be large (almost life size) in order to keep me busy for the next few weeks. Indeed it did take weeks to complete, and by the time I had finished, the blooms were not as gorgeous as they once were. FOR SALE

Pens (Posca and black ink) and watercolour on Arches paper floating in a Tasmanian oak frame 54x65cm. This is one of a series that I completed in my studio after returning from overseas and Tobermory, Island of Mull, Scotland. Here in this rugged forest there were plenty of steep sides and lots of wild trees, often covered with moss and lichen.

FOR SALE

UPDATE: This painting was awarded First Prize in the Local Content category at the Flemington/Kensington Rotary Art Show (over 400 works) March 2021

This was from a photo taken whilst on a walk in the Norwegian mountains. Thank you Beth for your image. I use Posca pens and black ink with an old dip pen.

I painted this quick (half hour or so) portrait using pens and watercolour from the zoomed live image of author Bernadine Evaristo. At another location she was also being painted by a previous finalist in the SkyArts Portrait Artist of the Year program. Because of the COVID 19 pandemic 2020 this program could not be held, so SkyArts set up a Portrait Artist of the Week with well known people as the models. I was amongst thousands of artists around the world who also painted Bernadine. So interesting to see many other artist’s interpretations.

This is the beautiful view from my friend Torhild’s house, in Stavanger, Norway. We have been friends for over 47 years. I have sketched it with pen and watercolour on site, and used this as a reference for this painting.

In 2019, this work won Best oil/acrylic painting under $1500 at the Camberwell Art Show.

Still thinking.jpg

There are some beautiful forests in Europe and we came across this one in Nuremberg during the autumn when the leaves are stunning.

This is the final walk taken by the animals recently sold in the Newmarket Saleyard (Melbourne). The trees are evergreen which sheltered the animals all year. The sale yards were closed in 1987.

The Constance Wu Award 2017

I was awarded this today jointly with Sue Jarvis, whose work I greatly admire.
Here is information about the award from the MSWPS website:

The Constance Wu Award was established by Carolyn Yong in memory of her mother, Constance Wu.
This award was first presented in 2012. It is presented to the artist receiving the most votes from MSWPS members whose works have been shown in the Annual Exhibitions.

This peer evaluated award was initially presented as The Mabel Pryde Prize and later as The MSWPS Award. MSWPS thanks Carolyn for this support.

In 2017 we have joint winners of this award.(Both artists will share the prize money.)

Elizabeth Moore Golding for ‘Lost in Thought’ and Sue Jarvis for ‘9am Swanston Street’. They will be presented with this award donated by Carolyn Yong in memory of her mother at the Christmas Lunch.

Congratulations to these members and thanks to the donors.
